QB 1987 - 1996
The most technically advanced British Seagull was designed and manufactured in partnership with Queens University Belfast, pioneers of two-stroke engines at that time. The project started in 1985 with the objective of more power and better economy, they achieved this, along with a much quieter operation too!
QB Engines
The British Seagull QB Series Kingfisher was introduced in 1987 to much fanfare at the London Boat Show, followed soon after by the QB Osprey and QB Curlew models. The QB project began in 1985 were the British Seagull development team, based in Poole, knew that the time was right to take advantage of ‘modern technology’ to update the range. Three areas were marked for improvement, Power, Noise, Economy.
To better achieve this goal British Seagull teamed up with Queens University Belfast, who were known at the time to employ some of the best two-stroke engineers in the world, to develop the new era of Seagull. At the heart of the QB engines was the latest in cross scavenge combustion system, proven to be the best of its day. This, together with a redesign of the starter and flywheel housing, and venting better venting of the carburettor, more power, better economy, and less noise resulted. The QB Kingfisher was born. This is a 6 Horsepower had a wide ratio gearbox and large diameter propeller developing a massive 115-130 lbs thrust on a bollard pull, making it ideal auxiliary for sailing and power craft.
The QB engines were amongst the most tested engines Seagull ever made with in laboratory test tanks and lake testing of pre-production models. Marine journalists, fishermen, and selected dealers were also provided engines to complete a rugged test program.
Shortly after the launch success of the QB Kingfisher came the introduction of the Osprey, a 5 Horsepower engine, and the QB Curlew, a 4 Horsepower engine to complete the range.
